The safety experts and number crunchers at AdvisorSmith have analyzed the data and compiled a list of the safest towns and cities in Minnesota.

The team at AdvisorSmith looked at things like FBI stats on burglary, larceny, and vehicle theft -- along with violent crimes such as murder, rape, robbery, and assault.

Recently, Minnesota was named the third safest state in the country.

The unrest of 2020 along with dynamics exposed by the coronavirus pushed crime statistics up across the Twin Cities. Authorities say violent crimes in Minneapolis ballooned by 21% in 2020, a year marked by the onset of the coronavirus pandemic and widespread protests against racial injustice.

They broke things down and divided their results into three groups; small towns, mid-sized communities, and bigger cities. Here's how things shake out:

The 'Large Cities' list ranked 19 Minnesota communities. Saint Cloud came in at #18, between Saint Paul (#17) and Minneapolis (#19).

Saint Cloud's 'crime score' of 89.6 was well above the state average for large cities of 43.0. Saint Paul scored 82.6, with Minneapolis earned a 102.1. On the other end of the crime score list, the safest large city in Minnesota, Lakeville, scored a 13.8.
