There’s something about a quiet Minnesota morning that makes you notice it more.

Maybe it’s the hum of the furnace on a chilly day, or the way the house feels a little still before everything gets going. And there they are...your pets, your companions. Waiting for you to get out of bed, give them some love and some food, and always willing to give you lots of love in return.

SLOWLY...IT HAPPENS

But...there comes a day, when they get older, that they move a little slower than they used to, and you notice things slowly at first...then you start putting them together. They are sleeping longer than they used to...they are losing weight...they don't play much anymore.

MR. BEAN

My cat Mr. Bean, who is somewhere between 19 and 20 years old, still purrs. He still drinks water. He still eats...slowly...and more often. But he also can't jump like he used to. His mouth bothers him. He can't clean himself anymore.

Then it hits you. They aren't going to live forever. Maybe the time is going to be sooner than you think? How will you know when it's time to say goodbye?

If you’ve ever loved a pet, you already know that this is the part no one prepares you for. Not the joy. Not the years of companionship. But the questions that come later. The ones that sit heavy on your heart.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN IT'S TIME TO SAY GOODBYE?

I've been asking myself that question about my adorable Mr. Bean for the last few weeks.  For many pet owners, that question doesn’t come all at once. It sneaks in quietly. Maybe it’s when they stop jumping up to their favorite spot. Maybe it’s when their routine changes, or when you start paying closer attention to things you never had to think about before.

HHHHHMM SCALE

Veterinarians, including guidance from the American Veterinary Medical Association, often say the focus should be on quality of life. There are tools, like the HHHHHMM scale, that help break it down, looking at pain, hunger, hydration, hygiene, happiness, mobility, and whether there are more good days than bad.

But in real life, it doesn’t feel like a checklist. It looks more like this:

  • You find yourself offering food more often, just hoping they’ll take a few bites.
  • You make sure their water is always fresh and close by.
  • You step in to help with the things they used to do on their own, like cleaning them, comforting them, checking on them to see if they are just sleeping.
  • You notice they sleep a lot longer.

So you adjust. You show up. You love them a little harder, and sometimes, even in the middle of all that uncertainty, you realize something important...It's not time to say goodbye yet. He's not ready...and neither are we.

CHOICES

The other part that is so incredibly difficult is that sometimes the bill that could extend their life costs more than what you have. Whether it's $2500, or $1000, or $600. If you have to choose between losing your home and one more bill...the heartbreak is reality. It's not affordable for everyone. Some people CAN put everything on credit....but you still have to make a monthly payment, and that's just the reality of it.

That’s where I am.

I can see that my cat isn’t doing as well as he used to. There’s no denying that. But he’s still here. He still finds comfort. He still has moments that feel like HIM.

So for now, it’s not about saying goodbye.

MAKING EACH DAY A LITTLE EASIER FOR THEM

It’s about making each day a little easier for them. These are the things that we are doing for Mr.Bean now:

  • It’s about daily cleanings, soft food, and patience.
  • It’s about watching closely, but not rushing the moment.
  • It’s about recognizing that love doesn’t always mean letting go right away.
  • Sometimes it means leaning in and caring for them differently.
  • It's about carrying him around and talking to him.
  • Petting him and snuggling him close at night.
  • It's about listening to his needs and paying attention to his purrs.

There may come a day when the balance shifts, when the hard moments outnumber the good ones. And when that day comes, I’ll face it.

But today isn’t that day.

ARE YOU IN THE SAME PLACE?

If you’re in that same place right now, where you are watching, wondering, doing everything you can, know... you’re not alone, and everything you do to show your pet you love them...MATTERS.

As Minnesotans, we don’t always say it out loud, but this kind of love runs deep. Whether it’s holding on a little longer or knowing when to let go, it all comes from the same place. Love.

I honestly don't know how much more time our family has with Mr. Bean. All I know is, he still loves us, and he's not ready to go yet. But I'm going to make sure that every moment he has, he knows that he is loved and appreciated. That's all we can do, and I think that's all they want from us.
