Patriotic summer holidays are on the horizon. If you are planning lighting off fireworks to celebrate, here are the laws around their use in Minnesota.

Legal in Minnesota:

  • Sparklers
  • Ground based sprakling devices that are non-explosive and non-aeriel
  • Novelty devices like snakes and party poppers
  • Cones and tubes that emit sparks
  • Fountains
  • Ground spinners
  • Wheels

Illegal in Minnesota:

  • Anything that flies or explodes like
    • Firecrackers
    • Bottle rockets
    • Missiles
    • Roman candles
    • Mortars and shells

What happens if you are caught with illegal fireworks?

If the violation involves explosive fireworks in an amount of 35 pounds gross container weight or more, to imprisonment for not more than one year, or to payment of a fine of not more than $3,000, or both.
If the violation involves explosive fireworks in an amount of less than 35 pounds gross container weight, to imprisonment for not more than 90 days, or to payment of a fine of not more than $700, or both.

So basically you're better off catching a fireworks display at a Friday night Rox game, or a park on the 4th of July. Have a great summer!
