  • If you're an adult looking to fish without a license you MUST be accompanied by a child 15 years or younger.
  • You do not need a stamp this weekend if you're fishing with a child.
  • There's no such thing as 100% safe ice. The DNR does not measure ice thickness. So, make sure you measure it yourself and be careful. Ice needs to be at least 4 inches for you to stand on it and fish, 5-7 inches to support a snowmobile, 8-12 inches for a standard car and 12-15 inches to support your truck.
  • Ice should be checked every 150 feet for safety. You'll need an ice chisel and an auger.
  • Create an emergency plan! Consider wearing a life jacket under your winter clothes. If you fall through the ice you should leave your winter clothes on. Keep ice picks on hand to help you if you fall through the ice, etc. you can check out the Minnesota DNR's ice safety tips here.
  • If you do fall through ice, follow the 1-10-1 rule. You can find a link to it here.
  • Temperatures will be very cold throughout the state this weekend. Make sure you and your child are dressed properly for the weather. Know the signs of hypothermia.
