WAITE PARK -- A Waite Park apartment complex caught on fire late this morning.

Fire crews were called to Sundial IV Apartments at 501 7th Street South around 11:30 a.m.

Waite Park Fire Chief Jim Aleshire says he believes fire started in a hallway on the east side of the building.

When crews first arrived they had to rescue residents from the upper levels. Many residents jumped from windows to escape the fire and five were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The fire caused significant damage to the inside of the building.

Aleshire believes the building is not safe to live in and it will be officially determined by the fire marshal.  The Red Cross is on the scene assisting families.

7th Street South is no longer blocked off to traffic.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
