ST. CLOUD -- The VA Office of the Medical Inspector has delivered a copy of its final report to the St. Cloud VA Health Care System.

The Medical Inspector conducted a site visit last January after Congress asked for an investigation into concerns raised by employees at the St. Cloud VA. There were five primary concerns raised between 2013 and 2014.

The concerns were related to veteran care on the Respiratory Dependency Unit, understaffing at the hospital, misrepresentation of doctor workloads, management's lack of addressing employee concerns and fear of retaliation for raising those concerns, and a hostile work environment.

The report found evidence to support some of the concerns but many were determined to be unfounded.

The findings concluded that prior to 2013 there were violations in how nurses gave insulin in the respiratory unit, but computer upgrades since then have eliminated the concerns.

The report found patient numbers assigned to caregivers were too high leading to an overwhelmed staff. More hires have reduced those patient numbers according to the report.

The Medical Inspector didn't find any evidence of efforts to intentionally misrepresent doctor workloads or dismiss concerns identified by employees. Leadership also was found to take concerns by employees seriously and take appropriate actions.

Finally, the report indicates there was no retaliation against staff.
