I thought we were past flu season in Minnesota, but I've since been proven wrong. Over the weekend I got sick with a nasty stomach bug that came out of nowhere. I don't even know anyone that's sick. I thought I had food poisoning but my doctor said it was the stomach flu. Great. So, I'm warning you to take a few extra precautions when you're out and about to make sure that the stomach flu doesn't ruin your weekend like it did mine.

Some people think that if they got the flu shot this year, they are protected against the stomach flu. That couldn't be further from the truth. The flu shot prevents you from getting a very specific type of flu strain that is different from the stomach flu.

According to the Mayo Clinic, you need to wash your hands with both soap and water for at least 20 SECONDS. It's important that you also clean under your nails. Hand sanitizer is a good last resort but soap and water is better.

Avoid sharing cups, eating utensils and anything else that could share germs with others in your home. It's also important to make sure your sanitizing surfaces in your home and at your desk at work. If you've been in contact with someone with the stomach bug, keep your distance and take precautions.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unclean hands because that's how germs enter into your body. The Mayo Clinic also suggests that you avoid ordering ice in your drink at a restaurant because it can be contaminated.

Take my advice and stay healthy my friends. You don't want what I had...trust me.
