The Sandin family is held hostage in their own home for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime including murder is legalized.

The movie stars Ethan Hawke, Lena Headly and Max Burkholder in the the year 2022 a time of crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has authorized an annual 12-hour period in which all criminal activity totally legal.

The police can't be called. Hospitals suspend help. It's one night when the citizens regulates this lawless moment in time without thought of punishment. On this night plagued by violence and an epidemic of crime, one family wrestles with the decision of who they will become, friend or foe when a stranger is helped in the Sandin's home.

I give the film a 3.5 out of 5 for it's heavy political overtones, yet the film does make you think about what the future may bring our way when it comes to decisions by our leaders.

The film is showing at the Parkwood Cinemas, check your local listing for showtimes, the film is rated 'R' and runs 85 minutes.
