Super Foods Kids Will Eat
I was the pickiest eater when I was a kid and I know more than a few kids who are picky eaters and some who, like me only want junk food. Here are a few yummy foods that are good for the little ones -- and it's all things they'll eat!
I found out I have high cholesterol, and I've read that oatmeal and whole grains can help lower cholesterol in adults, but did you know that oatmeal is a very kid friendly super food? Studies show that kids who eat oatmeal concentrate better in class. That's because oatmeal breaks down slowly and keeps their little tummies fuller longer and gives continual energy instead of an energy spike and subsequent crash. I'm a fan of the Quaker Instant Oatmeal Cups.
A cup of hot cocoa was my favorite treat when I came in from playing outside in the winter, but did you know that cocoa (at least 70 percent pure) can promote good oral health and healthy skin? Kids don't have to just drink it hot. Sprinkle it on fruit or put some in yogurt for additional and tasty nutrition.
I love fruit. It's juicy and sweet and it's a healthy dessert alternative, but did you know that fruit is an excellent food for kids. It's packed with antioxidants, vitamins and nutrients plus fiber for healthy digestion. A plate of fruit is also a great way to teach little ones their colors. My favorites are red raspberries, blueberries and cantaloupe.
I'm a big fan of sweet potatoes. I had heard of sweet potatoes my whole life as part of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, but had never had it myself, so when I was eating at a restaurant in Chicago, I had mashed sweet potatoes and I fell in love. Sweet potatoes are packed with vitamin A for healthy vision, good skin and immune system support. Sweet potatoes taste great mashed, baked, roasted, or in tot or fry form. My favorite are Alexia Brand sweet potato fries drizzled with olive oil and rosemary. Kids will love sweet potatoes with marshmallows and cinnamon.
