ST. JOSEPH -- Authorities were called to a house fire in St. Joseph last (Tuesday) night.

The incident happened just before 6:30 p.m. at 220 Minnesota Street East.

St. Joseph Police Chief Joel Klein says the fire was reported to have started in the mechanical room downstairs.

Officers on scene helped get the homeowners out of the house before fire crews arrived.

Klein says the house sustained minimal water and fire damage, but smoke damage was extensive throughout the home.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the homeowners who had to be displaced due to the home being uninhabitable.

No one was hurt and the cause remains under investigation.
