SARTELL -- Five Sartell police officers were honored this (Monday) evening for their roles in helping to deliver a baby and saving a life last month.

Sergeant Kelly Mader, Officer Steve Matthews and Officer John Lester were presented with the Stork Award for helping a 35-year-old Sartell woman, who was going into labor back on August 26th.

Lester says delivering babies doesn't happen very often but you're glad you're trained for it.

"You're excited and praying everything goes well. You think back to training, get the kit ready and go from there," says Lester

Both the mother and baby girl are doing well and Matthews says they came to visit a few days after.

"She came into the office with the baby and brought us some treats to thank us and it was nice to see them again," says Matthews.

This is the first time any of the officers have delivered a baby, but Mader says he has had a few close calls.

"I've been close once with the chief but this is a first for me for as long as I have been here," says Mader.

Officers Rob Lyon and Kari Bonfield were also honored tonight with the Life Saving Award.

On August 24th both officers responded to the scene of an unresponsive 89-year-old man. With the help of their training they were able to revive him, before he was taken to the hospital.
