TRON: Legacy

Starring: Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde

Summary: Sam Flynn (Hedlund) is a brilliant yet rebellious youth who is tormented by the mysterious disappearance of his father Kevin Flynn (Bridges).  While investigating a strange message he received, Sam gets sucked into the same cyber world where Kevin has been trapped for 20 years.  There Sam meets Quorra (Wilde) and along with his dad set out on a journey to escape and return to the real world. Along the way the meet resistance from Clu (young-looking Bridges) who wants to escape first in order to conquer the world of humans.

Visually, the movie is spectacular.  It seems the franchise has benefited from the advances in special effects over the last 20 years.  The soundtrack, provided by Daft Punk, is quite enjoyable as well.

Sadly, the storyline feels a bit generic.  Kevin is a genius who strives for perfection and excellence, only to realize that his son Sam is the greatest achievement of his life.  Father and son make amends and Sam vows to continue his father’s legacy.  I’m also not sure I liked Bridges’ portrayal of Kevin Flynn.  Apparently when you’re trapped as an exile in a cyber universe you somehow turn into the Dude.  Grade: B

Trivia: The wardrobe budget for this movie was $13 million. Each customized light-suit cost approximately $60,000.

Rated: PG – For sci-fi violence and some mild language.
