The Roommate

Rated: PG-13 – For language, violence, and sensuality.

Starring: Leighton Meester, Minka Kelly, Cam Gigandet
Rebecca (Meester) is a strange girl who develops an obsessive relationship with her new roommate Sara (Kelly). Rebecca’s infatuation makes her do “crazy” things to ensure that Sara stays with her. Cam Gigandet plays Sara’s boyfriend but is nothing more than simple eye candy. Rebecca is a psycho but we never learn why.  Apart from a discovery of pills for bi-polar disorder, we never learn why Rebecca is the way she is. Ultimately Sara realizes what a creep Rebecca is and fights to get away.
I had a strange feeling of déjà vu when I saw this movie and I think I know why. Quite possibly it’s because it’s the exact same story as “Single White Female”. While “The Roommate” is set in L.A. instead of New York City and the cast looks like they just walked out of a Calvin Klein photo shoot, the biggest difference is that there is nothing remotely scary or even creepy about this movie.  It is nothing more than a weak echo of a better movie.
