Gnomeo & Juliet

Rated: G – For mild cartoon violence.
Starring: James McAvoy, Emily Blunt
The story of Romeo and Juliet has been told a hundred times. This time it is told through the eyes of cute little garden gnomes. Gnomeo (McAvoy) is a blue gnome from Mrs. Montague’s garden. Next door in Mr.Capulet’s garden is red gnome Juliet (Blunt).
They meet one evening in a garden across the alley and fall in love before realizing who they are. Not even the feud between the two families can keep them apart.
Unlike other versions of this tale this one is relatively drama-free and kid-friendly. While many animated films these days try to appeal to adults with witty dialogue, this movie is really just aimed at young children and that’s ok. The delightful supporting cast gives the film a sweet charm and the soundtrack, provided by Elton John, is perky and fun.
Grade: B
Trivia: James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart both lend their voices to this film. This summer McAvoy will be playing the role of Charles Xavier in the new X-Men movie, a role originated by Stewart in the first three films.
