$5 billion budget deficit and thousands more lost as campers were booted out of state parks yesterday and rest areas remained closed- The state government of Minnesota has pulled the shutters on services as political leaders were unable to settle their differences on the state budget.

Gov. Mark Dayton and top Republicans failed to reach an agreement well before the midnight deadline. Dayton demanded tax increases on top earners, the GOP declined.

We’ll feel the impact at its fullest today, as thousands of state employees stay home and all state provided services are suspended.

Critical areas of service will continue on- state troopers, prison guards, the courts and disaster response have been granted a sort of immunity. MnSCU schools and the U of M reached an agreement to continue most areas earlier in June.
