Help my kids with their homework?  Impossible!  The homework they have is all done online, with google this and google that. They don't even need a pen and paper anymore. The classes my kids are taking? I never had. Not even in college. So when it comes to being supportive and helping your children with their homework, how can you help them, without hurting them?

According to Web MD, providing guidance, is the best way to help your child with homework. Kids learn best when they are given guidance, rather than parents doing problems for them. Even if you don't know what they are learning, you can still help them.

SHOW THEM A DIFFERENT APPROACH

It's knowing when to jump in and help and then get back out again so the child can get the help, but then put it to use, and practice what they've learned. No pain, no gain is a misconception. They say while a certain amount of struggling is okay, pointless struggling, your child banging their head against a wall is a waste of their time.

GIVE THEM EXAMPLES

So how can you assist your struggling student?  If they are having difficulty understanding a problem, try to show them another way of doing it. Draw out a picture to explain the concept if you can.

BE HONEST

If you really don't know how to do the work that your child has brought home, don't be afraid to say, "I don't know how to do this either. Let's see if we can find some examples on line and figure this out together." By doing this, you're going to show your child that there are lots of online resources, that they'll be able to find even when you're not there to help them.
