Why is it that this time of year, we start getting itchy throats, runny noses, and all the fun cold symptoms that seem to go right along with the changing seasons?

Here are some tips to stop those symptoms before they start.

WASH THOSE HANDS CORRECTLY

Antibacterial soaps are NOT the best way to avoid germs. Triclosan, which is found in many antibacterial soaps, is a hormone disruptor! It can damage your heart, and it creats antibacterial resistant super bugs. YUCK! On top of it, there's no actual reason for it to be in the product. Minnesota is actually banning it! The Food and Drug Administration as well as The American Medical Association have found that antibacterial soaps are NO BETTER to use than regular soap.

MAKE YOUR OWN HAND SANITIZER

There are plenty of times when you need to touch your face, maybe shake hands with someone, and there is no sink available to you. Hand sanitizer is definitely a great second to washing your hands. You can even make your own!

STAY WARM WITH THE RIGHT KIND OF LAYERING

Staying warm in the cold fall and winter months helps your immune system stay focused on keeping you from harmful bacteria and germs in your environments.  It's suggested to look for clothing made from wool or natural antimicrobial materials, rather than those claming to be odor free, antibacterial or germ fighting. These may contain other chemicals that you don't want close to your body or your family.

DON'T STRESS

We  don't think about it until our health starts taking a turn for the worse. But stress, has a terrible effect on us. The best thing to remember, is that STRESSING doesn't help any situation. Try to take deep breaths throughout the day....let go of the things that are bothering you...and keep moving forward. Focus on the good things in your life, rather than daily stresses.

PROBIOTICS FOR YOUR GUT

Your gut bacteria is incredibly important to staying healthy. Take a probiotic, or get healthy foods that contain probiotics. These foods include:

  • Greek yogurt
  • Real Sauerkraut
  • Artichokes
  • Dark Chocolate

EAT BREAKFAST WITH EGGS AND GREENS

You know that people always say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It definitely CAN be...if you're loading up on nutrient rich foods. Try a spinach and egg omelet...Or throw together a smoothie with berries, coconut milk, spinach and some protien.
