Puss in Boots

Starring: Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis

Summary: This is the story of Puss (Banderas), the lovable, swashbuckling feline from the Shrek movies. The movie shows his humble origins as an orphaned kitten (so cute) in Mexico. At the orphanage he becomes friends with Humpty Dumpty (Galifianakis), who also feels like an outcast. Together Puss and Humpty dream of adventure, but when Humpty betrays him, Puss is forced to run as an outlaw. A chance encounter with fellow outlaw Kitty Softpaws (Hayek) reunites Puss with Humpty and he jumps at the chance to clear his name.

It seems spin-offs and origin stories aren’t just for comic-book movies anymore. Of all of Shrek’s sidekicks, Puss in Boots has always been my favorite. Maybe it’s because I love cats and all things fluffy or maybe it’s because Antonio Banderas is pretty hard to resist. Either way, I was very excited for this movie to come out and it did not disappoint. The 3D animation was done well but not entirely necessary. This is the fifth collaboration between Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek. Even in animation, their chemistry is perfect.

Trivia: This movie was intended to be a straight-to-DVD release but the studio decided to develop it as a theatrical release. Good call.

Rated: PG – For some adventure action and mild rude humor.

Grade: B
