I Was Nervous, But I Donated Blood For The First Time
January is National Blood Donor Month and I gave blood for the first time ever today!
I have to admit, I was a little nervous--blood and needles have always kind of freaked me out. Pete Hansen mentioned that he was going to donate today and he convinced me to do it as well.
Once I got to the American Red Cross building my nerves started to settle. I filled out a questionnaire and got a few tests done before it was time to go into the donation room.
Since it was my first time, they asked me to lay down while they took my blood. I was so comfortable I could have taken a nap. Luckily it didn't take very long because I would have fallen asleep. It only took about 10 minutes. I can't believe how easy it was.
If you're able to donate, I highly recommend doing it. You'll save lives and feel good about yourself in the process. Plus, the Red Cross usually has a shortage of donors in the winter months.
If you're interested in donating blood, here are a few eligibility requirements;
- Must weigh at least 110 pounds.
- Must be 17 years old with valid ID (16 year-olds eligible with parental consent).
- Cannot donate when ill.
- No age limit, as long as you’re in good health.
- Can donate every 56 days, or about six times per year.
