How to Help Victims of Hurricane Sandy

The folks behind the Occupy movement are actually doing some good and you can join in.

The Occupy movement last year didn’t do much to help their cause and in fact, residents of Lower Manhattan that I know and that I talked to said all they did was make a lot of noise and create a lot of trash, but this time, they’re doing something to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy and you can help, too. The way they did it is so cool.

It was born out of an idea that came up when John Heggestuen and two of his friends were looking for ways to help. They went to one area and were turned away; told there was nothing for them to do. They continued walking until they found a huge relief effort happening at a local church. They then ran off to buy groceries and supplies at a local store and thought that there had to be a bigger and better way to help, so they set up a wedding registry on Amazon.com and registered for needed items like toiletries, clothing, food, equipment and blankets and set the receiving address as The Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew at 520 Clinton Avenue in Brooklyn, NY.

The registry may not update right away, but rest assured, the items are all desperately needed. Small things like coolers, flashlights, batteries, and blankets are on the list.  Residents are also in need of baby items like wipes, formula and diapers. Personal care items like toothbrushes, tooth paste, mouth wash, body soap, shampoo conditioner, razors and feminine hygiene products are in demand. They also need clothing like socks, bras and underwear. The clean up effort is going to take a lot more elbow grease and likely a lot longer than anyone thought, so things like water pumps, generators, electrical cords, scrub brushes, work gloves, soap, bleach, disinfectants, detergent, and trash bags are high on the priority list.

This is just a personal plea from me, but I remember when I was a little kid and I was scared, one thing that made me feel better was my teddy bear. There is a link for any different kind of teddy bear you can think of, so if you’re buying things off the registry, can you please think of the children and include a teddy bear, too?

The organizers are asking that you please, please pay for expedited shipping or ask Amazon to waive shipping fees. The church is the receiving point for any and all donations made through Amazon, so anything you buy and send to the Clinton Avenue location will be put to use.
