It's the most wonderful time of the year, for most of us, but for some, that's not true. Some people get depressed around this time of the year. If you're one of them, here are a few ways to beat the holiday blues.

Maybe it's suffering the loss of a loved one, a painful breakup, financial issues or some other reason you just don't feel jolly this time of year. When you're ready, create a "new normal". One way to do that is to create a new holiday tradition. Celebrate how you want to celebrate; even if it means getting rid of the old way of doing things, or adding a new tradition or celebration to what you already do.

One way to do that is to help someone out. I struggled when I started out and somehow, someone knew what was going on and they gave me a helping hand. I survived on help from my parents and the Salvation Army. It was a really tough time for me and once I got back on my feet, I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't wallow in it and help out however I could. It's now a part of life and the Christmas season for me.

Another way to help beat the holiday blues is to just get away. Give yourself something to look forward to. Being stuck inside sucks. Giving yourself some new scenery is always a good thing. Even if it's just for a few days. You don't have to go to Hawaii or anything, but just a few days away in a new place you've always wanted to visit can occupy your mind and help you create new memories.

The most important thing to do is to take time for yourself. Give yourself permission to relax. If that's a manicure, a pedicure, massage, a hot bath or just having a piece of fudge, take the time to take care of yourself.
