Big album, big Broadway play, now a big movie- The stage musical of Green Day's American Idiot album is headed to the big screen, according to Deadline. Director Michael Mayer, who created both the original Berkeley, California and Broadway productions, is in talks to direct the film version, while Oscar-winning Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black is negotiating to write the script. It is also expected that Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong will be courted to play the role of the drug dealer St. Jimmy.

* The Broadway production has won two Tony Awards.

* Armstrong played St. Jimmy last September and again earlier this year in the Broadway show, sending box office grosses soaring. He is currently performing in the show again for its final weeks.

*The musical was optioned last year by Playtone Pictures, the production company headed by actor Tom Hanks.

* An American Idiot movie has been talked about since the album originally came out in 2004.
