My chickens are busy gals, laying over a dozen eggs every day. They lay a beautiful blue-shelled egg that would look great in any Easter basket but what if we took things up a notch? I heard you could use onion skins as a dye so I gave it a try. Here’s how to do it.

Soak onion skins in a bowl of cool water until soft.

Cut rags or cheesecloth into pieces (1 for each egg) about 8 inches square.

Wet surface of egg and wrap with softened onionskins. Wet a piece of cloth and wrap around onionskin-covered egg. Use a rubber band to hold cloth in place. Do this to all of your eggs.

Set eggs in saucepan of water. Bring water to a boil and cook eggs until hard-boiled (5 to 7 minutes after water begins to boil).

Drain hot water from pan and fill with cool water. Gently remove cloth pouches and onionskins. Rinse eggs with cool water and serve.

Or, if you think they’re just too pretty to eat, store them in a dry place and the eggs will dry out over time and can be kept indefinitely. Unless something goes wrong, they won’t smell of rotten eggs!
