SAUK RAPIDS - The next step in bringing a 57 unit apartment building to downtown Sauk Rapids has been approved by the city council.

During their meeting this (Monday) evening the council unanimously approved the site plan and planned unit development for the project requested by Torborg Builders.

The PUD was necessary because current city ordinance requires that there be retail on the first floor of a downtown apartment building, this one will not have retail.  Also, there are slightly fewer parking spaces than would normally be required for an apartment building.

Community Development Director Todd Schultz says he's been working on bringing this type of project to the downtown for a number of years.

Some of the features include 38 underground parking stalls, a rooftop deck, three studio apartments, four one-bedroom apartments with a den, 28 one bedroom apartments, and 22 two-bedroom with two baths.

The building will be built along Benton Drive, across the road from Walgreens, and next to the Sauk Rapids Bridge.

The project will still have to be brought back to the city council for things like the final approval of the appearance of the building.
