District 742 Voters Go to the Polls Tuesday on $167 Million Referendum

ST. CLOUD - After years of debate, whether or not St. Cloud will be building a new Technical High School is finally in the hands of the voters.

The referendum vote will be taking place tomorrow (Tuesday), with polls open from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. There are 13 polling places throughout the district.

There's just one question on the ballot, approve-or-reject a $167 million bond referendum. $113.8 million would be used to build a new Tech High School, $46.5 million to renovate Apollo High School, $4.2 million for technology upgrades, and $2.5 million for security improvements at all of the district's schools.

If the referendum passes, property taxes on a $150,000 home would increase by a little over $218 a year for the next 20 years.

District 742 has already bought land in south St. Cloud along 33rd Street for the potential new school.

The original Tech building opened nearly 100 years ago, in 1917.

If a new Tech is approved, the school board will look to sell the current building, and the adjacent Media Services building.
