'American Idol' fans were stunned yesterday, Aug. 2,  when it was announced that Season 7 finalist Michael Johns had tragically passed away on Aug. 1 at the age of 35. TMZ has since learned more details regarding the circumstances that led to the tragedy.

Johns reportedly twisted his ankle and went to a doctor on Thursday, July 31, after reporting pain. Swelling and bruising had traveled to his leg, but doctors did not find anything and sent him home. On Friday, Aug. 1, Johns was found unresponsive while sleeping on a couch at a friend's apartment. By the time the paramedics arrived, Johns had already passed away.

The cause is believed to have been a blood clot in the ankle as a result of the injury. If left untreated, blood clots have been known to cause serious medical problems or in Johns' unfortunate case, death.

A representative for Johns' family released the following statement: "Our family is devastated by the passing of our beloved Michael, a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from all corners of the globe."

Johns was a top eight finalist in Season 7 of 'American Idol' in 2008. Simon Cowell, who was a judge on 'American Idol' that season, tweeted the following yesterday:
