ST. JOSEPH - Change is coming for the historic Rolling Ridge Wedding and Event Center and Scenic Specialties location in St. Joseph.

Owner Randy Schmitz says they have had increasing requests to use the property for special events like weddings over the past few years.

"We know there's a general lack of having a unique outdoor space to celebrate special moments and having it be in a location that's also close to other amenities."

Schmitz bought the historic 1896 farm in 2001. It's at 31101 County Road 133. For weddings and events, Rolling Ridge emphasizes being remote enough for privacy, yet close to accommodations in St. Joseph.

"We want to bring people out of the traditional environment that we've become accustomed to and at the same time introduce the outdoors and a different element of fun," Schmitz says.

Major construction and restoration, including lifting and moving the historic barn, is happening this summer. Schmitz says he’s excited for another chapter for the historic site.

I'm sure it will develop and evolve over time just like the history of our farm over the last 120 years."

The public will be able to get a preview of what’s to come during an open house this Saturday (May 2nd) from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The public will also be able to experience spring at the garden center before the store is closed for construction in July.

After construction there will be a grand opening late this year or early next year.
