What’s A Caucus All About?
WHAT CANDIDATE DO YOU WANT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT?
Precinct caucuses are meetings that are run by Minnesota Political parties. They give you the opportunity to endorse your favorite presidential candidates, select delegates, and set goals and values you find important. This is YOUR chance to have a say in WHO is running for President.
Minnesotan's are encouraged to show support for their preferred candidates by participating in the endorsement process that leads up to the state and national party conventions. Honestly, if you don't give your vote now, you don't have the right to complain later...do you?
FIND YOUR CAUCUS LOCATION
The 2016 precinct caucuses are tonight at 7pm. To find your caucus location, go to http://mnvotesinfo.sos.state.mn.us/voters/precinct-caucus/. There is no absentee ballot, so if you want your vote for a candidate to count, this is your chance!
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE CAUCUS
Each political party runs their caucus meetings differently. Check with your political party if you have specific questions about the caucus. Basically what happens at caucuses there are four things that happen:
- Volunteers are chosen who will organize political activities, that could include maintaining contact lists, holding meetings, and helping campaign efforts.
- Vote for the person you want to be President.
- Discuss issues and ideas for the party to support. This is your chance to give your opinion on anything you regard as important for the future of our area, as well as our nation.
- Choose delegates who will endorse candidates at future conventions. Each political party has a different way of doing this, so it's best to contact your party for more information.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU CANT GO TO THE CAUCUS?
The Minnesota parties DO NOT have absentee voter options. So if you want your vote to count, you HAVE to attend the event.
You do have the right to take time off work to be at a precinct caucus or political party convention if you are a delegate. You must give your employer 10 days written notice in order for this to be allowed.
Even if you've never been involved in the process before, here is your chance. Your voice matters! Get involved and help the nation make the right decision for President!
