Cathedral’s Junior Captain Hunter Austing Is This Week’s All-Star Student [VIDEO]

ST. CLOUD - Hunter Austing is the junior captain for the Cathedral Crusaders. It is his work and dedication to the sport that's landed him as this week's All-Star Student.

Austing started football is the backyard with his brother, he hasn't stopped playing since.

"When elementary school came around I played football then, played flag football before that. I played varsity in ninth grade too, I started on defense," says Austing.

Head coach Andy Auger says it's not often that freshman get the chance to start on the varsity squad.

He says, "Part of the reason why he did is he's very teachable, he listens, he understands what's going on, and he does his job. Hunter plays defensive line for us, and doesn't get a lot of accolades because he plays D-line. He kind of does a lot of the dirty work, but he does a really good job at what he does."

After sitting out the majority of his sophomore year out due to injury, Austing was able to play a  full season this year, and Coach Auger was glad to have him back.

"It was kind of a big hole to fill for us," says Auger, "To be able to have him all year, and be a real consistent football player on our defensive line has made a big difference in our team."

After going (4-4) in the regular season, and then making it all the way to the section finals, Austing says everyone on the team has done a great job this year.

You've got to understand our conference, it's a lot harder than you'd expect. I mean, I thought we'd been having a really good season, just about every game we've played we've been right in it, and all of them have been pretty close.

Austing has one more year left of high school football. Coach Auger is excited to get his junior captain back next year.

Obviously his teammates think highly of him. He was selected by the coaches, and his teammates on that award. We're excited to have him back. He'll be a big leader for us again next year.

Austing is also excited for one more year of football. He's also excited to continue another aspect in his life.

"I really like Spanish, and so last year they offered a trip through Cathedral where we could go to Spain, so I went on that, and that was a really cool experience. This year I am in the Spanish National Honors Society. I plan on continuing with Spanish," says Austing.
