FOLEY -- The Benton County sheriff is asking boaters to be safe and courteous during this high water period. July 11th storms have dumped large amounts of water into lakes, rivers and streams.

The wake from boats and other watercraft can cause erosion to shorelines and diminish water quality.

Sheriff Troy Heck says you should remain as far away from shore as possible when operating above no-wake speeds. He also says swift currents in rivers can be dangerous, so wear a life jacket and be cautious.

Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner is asking boaters in Stearns County to reduce your boats and watercraft to "no wake" speeds within 300 feet of shorelines as well.
