Madonna kept her promise to offer a clean show during her Super Bowl XLVI halftime performance. It was not oversexed or even PG-13 rated, which could have been expected, since Madge has been known to demonstrate a flair for the erotic throughout her career.
Portland is a pop culture hot bed. From the hilarious series ‘Portlandia’ — which celebrates the indie-dom and coolness of the region and is as far removed from ‘American Idol‘ and its pop sensibilities — to the hipster-friendly nature of the often cloudy and rainy area, Portland is on our radar a bunch. No wonder ‘American Idol’ producers hit the city again this season for the audition phase.
With the news of Leslie Carter’s passing still fresh, rumors about the cause of death of the sister of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter and Aaron Carter are beginning to surface. Carter, an aspiring singer and mother of a young daughter, was supposedly in the grip of a prescription medication addiction. The battle had intensified in the days leading up to her death. While the family’s statement did not share the cause of death and requested privacy, other family members believe she overdosed.
No ‘Les Miz’ for Taylor Swift. After rampant rumors that the pop/country superstar would be playing Eponine in the upcoming big screen version of the musical ‘Les Miserables,’ producers have announced that British actress (and somewhat of an unknown in Hollywood) Samantha Barks would be playing the part instead. No big screen musical adaptations for Taylor Swift … Yet.
The axe — or is that the ‘X’ — fell at ‘X Factor‘ yesterday (Jan. 31), with judge Nicole Scherzinger being fired, along with host Steve Jones. Sources indicate that judge Paula Abdul was also cut. Word is producers and Simon Cowell were looking to make a fresh start for the show, whose ratings fell below expectations on Season 1.
Lady Gaga‘s parents Joe and Cynthia Germanotta are officially opening their long-discussed Italian eatery Joanne Trattoria next Wednesday, Feb. 1. The restaurant is located on West 68th Street and will serve up the kind of Italian fare the Mother Monster grew up eating and enjoying.
Jim Carrey’s daughter Jane tried out for ‘American Idol‘ at the San Diego round of auditions. She certainly looks like dear old dad. It’s a bold move for the daughter of a celebrity to try out for the show, but it’s also honest, since the 24-year-old isn’t relying on her dad’s name to get ahead. For that, we certainly applaud Jane Carrey.
On this special, Sunday night, post-NFC championship game edition of ‘American Idol,’ the producers hit San Diego, the So Cal city where the whether is always nice, to mine some talent. The auditions took place on the USS Midway, which was loud, but there was a crop of quality wannabes that got golden tickets to the next round.
What is it with reality talent competition judges botching the national anthem? ‘The Voice‘ coach Christina Aguilera bungled the song at the Super Bowl last February, and now, Aerosmith frontman and ‘American Idol‘ judge Steven Tyler is being crucified for his poor version of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner,’ which he sang this afternoon (Jan. 22) before the AFC championship game between the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens. The Pats actually won the game, so Tyler’s inept version wasn’t a curse or bad luck.
