Ariana Grande's next album won't be the light-hearted pop music her fans have come to know and love.

The pop star, who recently went through the dissolution of an engagement and the death of ex-boyfriend Mac Miller, shared details about her next album in an interview with Billboard. Grande, 25, told the magazine that she retreated to the studio to record new music amid the trials and tribulations, and she's poured it all into her next project.

She told the outlet her next album is the product of "feminine energy and champagne and music and laughter and crying. This [album's] not particularly uplifting."

"A lot of it sounds really upbeat, but it's actually a super sad chapter," Grande added.

It's being made in collaboration with Tommy Brown, Social House, Victoria Monet, Tayla Parx and Doug Middlebrook, in some capacity. According to Billboard, the album features "deep, bass-driven bangers with trap beats alternating with airy, sad ballads." One particular song, called "7 Rings," is a particularly interesting single on the new album.

"It was a...challenging fall day in New York," Grande revealed with a laugh. "Me and my friends went to Tiffany's together, just because we needed some retail therapy. You know how when you're waiting at Tiffany's they give you lots of champagne? They got us very tipsy, so we bought seven engagement rings, and when I got back to the studio I gave everybody a friendship ring."

She added, "That's why we have these, and that's where the song idea came from."

Grande recently shared a similar story on Twitter, telling fans the instrumental at the beginning of her latest single "thank u, next" is actually "7 Rings." Billboard described the song as "a party-ready twist on 'My Favorite Things.'"

No release date for the album has been set, so keep your eyes on Grande's social media accounts for more info.
