ST. CLOUD - Our first addition of our "All-Star Student of the Week" series takes us to the Volleyball Court at Cathedral High School.

Where Senior Rylee Medelberg has been with the team since 8th grade, and playing on the varsity squad since 9th grade. She began her volleyball career early on.

"When I was younger, I was just in random Sunday morning type stuff. Then I started playing volleyball in 5th grade for PA for St. Joe Lab as well as basketball and softball that year to," says Medelberg.

Over her years with the Cathedral High School Volleyball Team Medelberg has stepped into a leadership role for her team.

"I started my freshman year, and I was more of a background player. There were other people that were in the leadership role, and I had to grow into that leadership role as I got older. It was hard at first but I realized the importance of being the leader on the court, and how everyone, every team needs one and it builds off of each other," says Medelberg.

Her coach, Glenda Prom, says she has stepped up her game both on and off the court in the last two years.

"The last year she has really kind of stepped up to that, on the court, off the court, outside of school. I think she really has taken that role and I think younger kids really do look up to her as a role model, as a player, and in the classroom," says Prom.

Even with her dedication to her sports, Medelberg has been excelling in the classroom as well.

"We are pretty fortunate that the kids that I have had in this program are really great kids. On the court, off the court, they have pretty high expectations of themselves and the classroom, as do we coaches. We expect, you know, that school is their number one priority. The kids here really, really do follow that, and Rylee absolutely I can tell that academics are important to all the kids," says Prom.

"It's really important to me to be focused on school as well as sports. Sports are a big part of my life but I think having good grades and stuff like that is more important for life in general," says Medelberg

Medelberg does have plans to continue her education at the college level. She says volleyball could also be in her future. Something that her coach agrees with.

Prom says, "For us she is a key middle hitter, college level weather they utilize her in middle spots if they got taller athletes, she's an athlete that can easily be put into a different position and be an outside hitter or a right side hitter."

As for the rest of this year, Medelberg looks to have a great season with the rest of her team, and to continue being the role model that she has become. She had these words of advice for her school mates.

Even if you don't feel that you're doing well, just staying positive and listening to coaches feedback and just becoming friends with team mates is really important to be successful in anything really.
