ST. CLOUD - The St. Cloud City Council has rejected a plan by city staff to install parking meters in at east side parking lot.  The council took no action to amend the “parking meter zone” to include the East St. Germain lot, which is the same as voting against it.

City leaders recommended putting the meters in a parking lot at 223 East St. Germain Street – that’s just to the west of the Holiday Gas Station, where the former Salvation Army building used to be.

Council members Steve Laraway and Carol Lewis expressed concern that the city removed on-street parking on East St. Germain Street several years ago when they converted it to a four-lane road, and the businesses in that neighborhood already have limited parking for their customers.

The city recently received a grant to implement green stormwater improvements on the east side, which means the gravel lot will be paved. The project will also include a rain garden and an underground treatment system.
