Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991)

The Red Hot Chili Peppers were basically a heavy metal/heavy punk band, until their 5th album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Labeled at the time as 'alternative', this album was actually very funky and soulful. Lead man Anthony Kiedis has admitted that this record was heavily influenced by the "Godfather of Funk", George Clinton, and his band Parliament.
"Give it away, give it away, give it away, now !!!" Yes, we all remember "Give it away", one of the better party starters of all time. 'Breaking the Girl', and 'Under the Bridge' were very popular songs and videos at the time, as well. Personally, I recommend 'Suck My Kiss' and especially track #8 'The Righteous & the Wicked'. This album's lyrical content is loaded with sexual innuendos and references to drugs and death, as well as themes of lust and exuberance. But this album is a perfect mix of rock and soul, with Kiedis often 'rapping' over Flea's powerful baselines. A fun album to be sure, loaded with energy and volume. Two big thumbs up!
