Shawn was born in South Dakota on the 10th of January, 1956. She is self taught on the guitar by age 10 and she got her break singing backup for Suzanne Vega.
This song references a woman who does some repair work to the oven, then uses the gases to burn her house down by lighting a match. It's all about escaping her past.

Before writing and having to re-write, Shawn had never written songs about characters - they were always in the first person. She had the following quote to say about how fun it was to make the record,  "feeling comfortable enough to write a story instead of all the songs being so personal."
