ST. CLOUD - 7th graders and other new students were greeted like celebrities for their first day of school at Cathedral High.

Students, teachers and staff were out on Third Street, cheering and welcoming 7th graders and their families. New Assistant Principal at Cathedral, Todd Van Erp, says it was great to see the energy.

"I started at the beginning of August here and I've been waiting for this day all month long. For me it's especially exciting."

Cathedral staff and students passed out muffins and coffee to parents while their children, some nervous and other embracing the celebration, stepped in for their first day.

"We've got a red carpet inside for new students to walk on as they come into the building, we have the pep band playing, just trying to welcome the kids and their families as they start the year," Van Erp says.

The entire school teaching staff and student ambassadors were full of high energy to kick the year off right. Some juniors and seniors said it was entertaining to see the reaction from the younger students.

"It's so exciting to see how they get so nervous, but I tell them that "you'll have so much fun."

The entire student body of Cathedral starts school on Tuesday.
